Is the top veneer? Does it get chipped?

I have had this table for about 19 days and it hasn't chipped but somehow a little area on top is discolored. It is lighter than the rest. Not quite sure how it happened. I put a coaster on it so I don't have to look at it and get annoyed. otherwise, great table.
